Brian M. Zanghi, PhD, Nestlé Purina PetCare
Dr. Brian Zanghi joined Purina in 2005, where he currently is a Research Scientist in the Molecular Nutrition Group at the Nestlé Research Center in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned a doctorate degree in canine nutritional physiology from the University of Kentucky, and then continued his training there as a postdoctoral research scientist working on nutrient metabolism in aging animals.
His research focuses on canine exercise physiology, cognition and behavior, overall health for adult and older pets, and the role nutrition plays in optimizing the performance of active dogs. Dr. Zanghi has written several peer-reviewed publications on the scientific research of adult and senior dogs’ locomotor activity patterns, sleep rhythms, body composition, exercise, and cognition. Among his personal interests, he has been involved in the training and performance of Labrador Retrievers for over 15 years, and helped start a United Kennel Club Hunting Retriever Club in Kentucky during his doctorate program.
Robert L. Gillette, DVM, MSE, DACVSMR, Red Bank Veterinary Hospital
Dr. Robert Gillette received his veterinary degree from Kansas State University, and later completed a master’s degree in biomechanics with a minor in exercise physiology at the Human Performance Laboratory of the University of Kansas. He served as Director of the Sports Medicine Program at Auburn University from 2000 to 2012 and as Director of the Animal Health and Performance Program from 2009 to 2012. After leaving Auburn in 2012, Dr. Gillette was Director of the Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Service at the Veterinary Specialty Center at Buffalo Grove, Illinois. In 2014, he joined Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Red Bank, New Jersey.
Dr. Gillette is a charter Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and served as its first President.
Dr. Gillette has been an advisor to the U.S. Military Canine Programs and Army Veterinary Corps. His research interests include working and athletic canine performance; orthopedics, biomechanics and muscle physiology of canine and equine athletes; and the exercise physiology, muscle conditioning, injury prevention, lameness, rehabilitation, and performance of athletic, working and service dogs.
Joseph J. Wakshlag, DVM, PhD, DACVN, DACVSMR, Cornell University
Dr. Joseph Wakshlag graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he then continued residency training in pathology and nutrition, and a doctorate degree in pharmacology. He is now Associate Professor of Clinical Nutrition and Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at Cornell University. He is a charter member of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
An obsession with sled dogs led to Dr. Wakshlag’s research and publications on sled dog physiology, metabolism and neurologic disorders. More recently, he has been involved in clinical studies at the Auburn University Animal Health and Performance Program examining the effects of diet on olfaction. As a want-to-be musher, Dr. Wakshlag is the proud owner of a small kennel of Alaskan Husky/Eurohounds with whom he frequents the trails along the New York Finger Lakes.
