I began my journey with the AKC and hunt tests in 2003. Growing up in Nebraska, my family always had pointers, and we hunted pheasants and quail. However, once the CRP farm programs ended, much of the habitat disappeared, prompting my transition to waterfowl hunting.

Looking for a duck dog, I contacted the local pro, Brad Lewis, who happened to have a dog for sale. I was immediately impressed when he demonstrated the dog’s ability to pick up multiple marks and run blinds. I quickly realized that Dude, a yellow lab, was far more skilled than I was as a handler.

Worried Dude was spending too much of his summer in the backyard; I contacted Lewis again about training opportunities. He recommended I join the Missouri Valley Hunt Club. That advice sent me down an unforeseen path, and I became completely hooked after joining a training group and entering my first hunt test. As we progressed, we earned both a Senior and a Master title on Dude.

My involvement expanded over the years. I have served on the club’s board of directors, holding roles as president, vice president and general board member. I also work at the club’s four licensed events each year.

I competed in my first national in 2018, running the Master Amateur and earning two plates. The following year, 2019, I participated in my first Master National at H. Cooper Black and earned a plate.

My judging career began in 2007. I was honored to judge both the Master Amateur Invitational in Corning, Calif., and the Master National in Idaho in 2021 as a replacement judge. From 2022 to 2023, I served as director for the West Central region of the Master Amateur Retriever Club (MARC).

I’ve made great friendships through hunt tests. Without the introduction to my home club, none of those friendships would have been forged, and I am so thankful for them.

My wife, Pam, and I live in Omaha, Neb., and I am honored to serve on the Master National Board of Directors.
